Ad-Lib LincolnAd-Lib R&B/Soul Club,Lincoln is,to say the least, different from most of the mainstream soul-scene. The venue the music policy, the club itself are all identifiable with the early underground scene from the 50’s/60’s .The scene that started it all.We call our nights “Back to the Roots” in homage to those early years. It is not just the music that you will find an experience,it is the whole early culture as well..
The venue is underneath Lord Beaumonts 1823 Georgian Manor House. (This is now owned by Lincoln City Council and, houses the Unison Social Club .It has a large council run carpark to the rear of the property.)
The Cellar-Bar used for our Ad-Lib events has a separate entrance via steps to the rear of the main house. The thick stone- walled cellar-bar is ideal for early R&B.Think early beat club.A warren of areas and spaces. This includes a lounge bar (where Mick Casey sets up his record bar of must have r&b) and a separate sound-system room with dance-floor,tables and chairs.
Guests coming down the outside steps to the cellar are greeted with the early sounds of R&B,Soul,Doo-wop,Ska and Mod.What you won’t find at an Ad-Lib night is nostalgia. It’s a club for todays people of whatever age.For people who want to hear rare and underplayed-some tracks known from the early years, others discovered or re-discovered since that golden age.All 50’s/60’s,all on original vinyl. Tracks that, had they been available to those pioneering 60’s djs, would most certainly have been played on the original soul allnighter scene.
The guests know we like to keep it special so we only do four nights a year (non in the summer at this venue) .It’s a night they always look forward to.Mods with all their style.Soulboys/girls burning up the dance-floor.Scooterists and Ska fans giving it their all.R&B and Northern followers with open- minds to the different gendres being played under the one umbrella of an original cult scene.Even Rockabillies venture down. Many supporters travel from Doncaster,Hull,Nottingham besides local Lincolnshire towns like Scunthorpe,Brigg and Spalding to name but a few.The success of the nights mean we try and ticket them to avoid disappointment. We are continually adding email addresses from interested parties so we can keep them up to date regarding our events .Plus we give them first notice of impending tickets for sale.
The current set of djs Allan Swires,John Paul Leasing,Martin Greene,Trevor Quincey,Christian Scott and Neill Firth (not forgetting Dave Woolley dj who layed the solid foundations for the present clubs success)all make their mark on the club.Their enthusiasm is infectious and their various sets merge brilliantly considering the diverse music policy they are asked to encompass. The likes of John Lee Hooker,Muddy Waters,Sonny Boy Williamson,Ivory Joe Hunter,Tabby Thomas play seamlessly alongside Bobby Day,the Dells,Lou Johnson,Bobby Machin,Sugar Pie Desanto,Prince Buster,Skatalites,Don Drummond,Del Vikings and so on.
As stated earlier Ad-Lib try to keep the “Roots” of the scene alive and promote the cultural side of the scene. We seek out suitable images to promote our night. Many past images have been by kind permission of Mod/Pop artist Phil Bower.Others by research in libraries and from historical photographic albums full of prints from the worlds greatest photographers.
We try to make everything authentic and relevant to the original scene. We took Ad-Lib to a Soho cellar-bar venue 2 minutes from Carnaby Street soley because the place had that 60,s vibe. And reflected to what we are about.
We also project rare footage images from the late 50,s to the 60,s of artists, groups, scooterists, dancers, clubs etc.We believe it is this “bonding”of the cultural side with the music side that is capturing the imagination of our supporters and encouraging new (and younger) “faces”to our nights. It would seem it’s “cool” to be part of an underground scene again-at least it is at Ad-Lib !!!
